Promotions & Events Teen Read Week: Seek the Unknown Through Audiobooks

With their busy school and social schedules, teens are finding less and less time to read every day. Each year, Teen Read Week, a national literacy initiative sponsored by YALSA (Young Adult Library Services Association), encourages teens to rediscover and embrace a love of reading. Teen Read Week 2013 will be celebrated October 13 – 19, and the theme is “Read for the Fun of it: Seek the Unknown.”

This year, encourage your students and patrons to seek the unknown through audiobooks! They’re a great option for teens with a time crunch, because they’re the perfect way to listen on the go, during long car rides and free-time. Reluctant teen readers often find that audiobooks make for a more engaging and entertaining experience – sound effects, music, and multiple narrators bring stories to life!

We’ve selected three audiobooks that allow teens to explore an unknown world alongside the main characters. With non-stop adventure and intrigue, these must-listens are the perfect way to introduce teens to audiobooks and they’re great picks for Teen Read Week! THE DIVINERS By Libba Bray
Read by January LaVoy

Maybe I can’t get THE DIVINERS off my mind because I am currently enjoying this fantastic title, but this audiobook seems made for Teen Read Week. Set in New York in the middle of the roaring twenties, this story is filled with historical references, plenty of suspense, and it’s completely addicting! When Evie O’Neill moves to New York from her boring hometown to live with her Uncle Will, the curator of an occult museum, she couldn’t be more excited. But when a series of occult-based murders occur, Evie and her uncle are pulled into the investigation. Through it all, Evie hides a secret: a mysterious supernatural power that could help catch the killer—if he doesn’t catch her first. Evie is a hilarious teen with tons of moxie, but the story is also told from a series of male and female perspectives, so it’s a great choice for any teen. The mysterious (and somewhat gruesome!) murders in this book will certainly keep teens “seeking the unknown.” I can’t recommend it highly enough and I can’t wait for the sequel coming this spring!

“Narrator January LaVoy provides lively, magnetic narration and gives unique voices to the book’s cast of fascinating characters. Listeners both young and old will enjoy this supernatural story and find this audio edition enthralling, irresistible entertainment.”–Publishers Weekly, starred review

TIME BETWEEN US By Tamara Ireland Stone
Read by Amy Rubinate

This audiobook will satisfy teen listeners looking for a fresh, exciting, and beautifully-written love story. Inventive and deeply romantic, it’s a spellbinding debut from an extraordinary new YA voice. Anna and Bennett were never supposed to meet: she lives in 1995 Chicago and he lives in 2012 San Francisco. But Bennett has the unique ability to travel through time and space, which brings him into Anna’s life, and opens a new world of adventure and possibility for both of them. Listeners who can’t get enough of Anna and Bennett’s story can follow-up with the recently released Time After Time, told from Bennett’s perspective.

“The story will hold readers with its twists and turns, present and future; its love, sadness, and anger; and especially, its surprising secrets.”–Booklist
