I love fall! The air gets crisp, the leaves change color, and we get closer to Halloween. As I baked my first pumpkin pie of the season (it’s always better with a freshly roasted pumpkin), and painted glow-in-the dark spiderweb nail art this weekend, I listened to Pennyroyal Academy by M. A. Larson. Pennyroyal Academy is a magical audiobook where princesses are trained to fight witches and rescue themselves. It got me thinking about some of the Spooky Listens we have on our list that are perfect for Halloween.

A VERY SPOOKY WEEKEND: Jodie got ready for Halloween by baking and painting her nails while listening to audiobooks!

In the spirit of Halloween and trick-or-treating we wanted to offer you the opportunity to get a very special treat – a FREE audiobook. All you have to do is fill out the form on the bottom of this blog for your chance to win a copy of one of the titles listed below. Quantities are limited but, since we are giving away more than 120 audiobooks, you have a very good chance of receiving one to enjoy this Halloween season.

Middle Grade Listens

SUDDENLY SUPERNATURAL BOOKS 1 AND 2 includes Book 1: School Spirit and Book 2: Scaredy Kat. Written by Elizabeth Cody Kimmel and narrated by Allyson Ryan, this collection is perfect for tween/teens with it’s mix of humor and fantasy. AudioFile praises, “Smart, sassy, and supernaturally aware—that’s Kat, the 13-year-old heroine whose first-person narrative is perfectly pegged by Allyson Ryan. Ryan captures Kat’s wit, sarcasm, and continued struggle with her newly acquired power as a medium.” Listeners will be further entertained by SUDDENLY SUPERNATURAL BOOK 3: Unhappy Medium which continues this magical series.

WHISPERING TO WITCHES by Anna Dale is an entertaining adventure full of witchy ink, friendly wind sprites, and broomstick rides across the night sky. When Joe befriends Twiggy, a young witch-in-training, he is quickly caught up in a dramatic mystery surrounding the greatest magic book in history. Publishers Weekly raved in a starred review, “Narrator John Curless offers an upbeat reading sustained with notes of suspense and mystery befitting Dale’s effervescent fantasy. Kids will be eager to follow the inviting Curless along for all the twists and turns here.”

In A TASTE FOR RED by Lewis Harris and read by Jaclyn Gaines, Svetlana Grimm thinks she is a vampire and it’s making her transition to sixth grade at Sunny Hill Middle School difficult. Things get interesting, though, when Svetlana’s beautiful science teacher, Ms. Larch, begins reading her thoughts. Could Ms. Larch be a vampire, too? Booklist praises, “Jaclyn Gaines pleasant reading style catches the humor in Svetlana’s side observations…Listeners will definitely enjoy this story of kids who save the day.”

Set during Halloween, with an urban legend feel, THE TANGLEWOOD TERROR by Kurtis Scaletta is a parody of and tribute to pulp-era horror stories. It’s a literary mystery that’s not too scary. It’s perfect to listen to all year long as Everette Plen does a fantastic job narrating.

For Young Adults

In DEARLY DEPARTED: A ZOMBIE NOVEL by Lia Habel and narrated by Kim Mai Guest, romance meets walking-dead thriller, spawning a madly imaginative novel of rip-roaring adventure, spine-tingling suspense, and macabre comedy that forever redefines the concept of undying love.

Sarah Mlynowski’s Magic in Manhattan series is full of engaging dialogue that teens will enjoy and Ariadne Meyers does a fantastic job narrating. In FROGS & FRENCH KISSES Rachel has finally come to terms with the outrageously unfair fact that her younger sister, Miri, has inherited magical powers from their mom. But when the whole witchcraft thing spirals out of control the fate of everything is in Rachel’s hands and she has to figure it out. In the follow up PARTIES & POTIONS everyone’s getting ready for a magical party. And in SPELLS & SLEEPING BAGS Rachel’s powers have arrived and she’s a bona fide get-your-broom-ready witch! School Library Journal raves, “Swiftly paced and convincingly narrated with doses of humor and familial poignancy listeners will be thoroughly engaged.”

ETERNAL by Cynthia Leitich Smith is told in the alternating voices of a vampire and a fallen angel. It’s expertly narrated by Allyson Ryan and Jesse Bernstein. AudioFile praises them writing, “Together the narrators create magic: Listeners will both love and hate Miranda as she drinks her way through Chicago’s population, and the suspense is thrilling as Zachary desperately tries to figure out a way to save his undead princess.”

BLESSED by Cynthia Leitich Smith and read by Kim Mai Guest is a delicious dark fantasy that will appeal to listeners of TANTALIZE and ETERNAL. While Blessed can easily stand alone, it’s so good listeners will want to go back to find out the backstory behind this nod to Bram Stoker.

WITCH CHILD by Celia Rees and narrated by Jennifer Ehle is a YALSA Amazing Audiobook and a special treat. Now that the pages of Mary Newbury’s journal have come to light, listeners can experience what it was like living in a society where differences were feared and defiance was deadly. Travel back to 1659 with Mary Newbury, the young granddaughter of a witch, who must disguise herself as a pious Puritan girl, hiding her true nature, to escape danger. Booklist raves, “Jennifer Ehle’s soft British accent suits the characters, and her serious vocal toes help convey the constant danger facing the young witch.”
