Terrifyingly Talented Trio Does it Again

SCOWLER
By Daniel Kraus, Read by Kirby Heyborne

Scary stories aren’t just for campfires anymore. Listen to this second Odyssey-winning collaboration between author Daniel Kraus, narrator Kirby Heyborne, and producer Kelly Gildea to experience the power of storytelling at its finest. When this winner was announced at the ALA Book and Media awards in Philadelphia, the audio clip that was played started a Twitter frenzy. So what exactly does this Scowler creature sounds like? Watch this video through to the very end to get a sneak peek at how Kirby can use his voice to creep out an audience! (Also a YALSA Amazing Audiobook for Young Adults: Top Ten)

Teen Love Triumphs! and Oscar Winner wins Odyssey Honor

ODYSSEY HONORS
ELEANOR & PARK
By Rainbow Rowell
Read by Rebecca Lowman and Sunil Malhotra

Not only has there been an outpouring of love for Rainbow Rowell’s poignant writing this year but the show of love and admiration between author and audiobook narrators has been an awesome thing to witness. Rowell even wrote an adorable blog post about her audio in which she gushed, “I just loved it. And not because I was sitting there thinking, ‘I sure wrote a great book.’ (Though Rebecca and Sunil do make it sound pretty good.) It was more like they made me forget that it was my book; I got lost in the story and their performances.” You just have to hear it for yourself. (Also a Printz Honor Book and a YALSA Amazing Audiobook for Young Adults: Top Ten)

MATILDA
By Roald Dahl, Read by Kate Winslet
Listen to a clip
We’re used to Winslet wowing us on the big screen; now get ready to be whisked away whether listening in your car, home, or wherever you go with headphones. “The Trunchbull” may be no match for Matilda, but Winslet is the perfect match for bringing this impressive heroine to life in Dahl’s beloved classic. (Also an ALSC Notable Children’s Recording)
