Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz has been a prominent figure and voice in the effort to help American veterans transition once they’ve returned from war. Last year, he announced that Starbucks would make it their goal to hire 10,000 veterans and military spouses over the next five years. Then, in March of this year, he pledged a donation of $30 million to Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder research.
Now, Schultz is teaming up with National Book Award finalist Rajiv Chandrasekaran to write FOR LOVE OF COUNTRY. Newly added to our Fall 2014 list, and releasing just before Veterans Day, BOT is excited to announce this new audiobook that honors and celebrates today’s American soldiers.
FOR LOVE OF COUNTRY shares with listeners the extraordinary heroism on the battlefield and the equally valuable contributions on the homefront of this generation’s American veterans, in a collection of compelling, original portraits that are made that much more personal on audio. Patrons will love hearing these true stories of remarkable valor carried out by our soldiers in Iraq, Afghanistan, and in post-9/11 America. By celebrating individual accomplishments overseas and here, this audiobook aims to shatter the negative stereotypes our veterans have endured over the years.
Penguin Random House recently released a quote from Schultz, who said that FOR LOVE OF COUNTRY “tells stories of the service and heroism of the men and women of our nation’s forces while highlighting their considerable leadership, discipline and citizenship as they move forward on a new mission—to continue serving society as the next greatest generation of American veterans.” He also said that “given that less than 1% of our country has served in the military conflicts of the last decade, this is a time in America when it’s crucial to bridge the divide in our society between our civilian and military populations.”
Rajiv Chandrasekaran, author (and narrator) of Little America, an intimate account of America’s troubled war in Afghanistan, will be reading this inspiring collection. In a starred review, Publishers Weekly described Little America as “solid and timely reporting, [with] crackling prose,” and The Wall Street Journal heralds Chandrasekaran as “a superb reporter and graceful writer.” This audio edition of FOR LOVE OF COUNTRY not only features Chandrasekaran’s superb writing, but also his own voice, bringing listeners even more intimacy to these heroic stories.
In addition, Schultz and Chandrasekaran plan to donate the majority of their proceeds to veterans service/transition organizations. Adding FOR LOVE OF COUNTRY to your library’s shelves and spreading the word to your patrons are two great ways you can join the effort to help our country’s veterans.
