Being a librarian is a bit like being a detective. Always on the lookout for new literary standouts–and constantly keeping your finger to the pulse of patrons’ interests–communities count on YOU for sleuthing out the season’s must-read and must-listen books. But title-talk aside, patrons also look to libraries to find the formats that best satisfy their listening styles as they combine audiobooks with a variety of activities–everything from crafting to cooking, but namely the often dreaded (but always improved by audio!) DAILY COMMUTE.
Put the CD in Collection Development
Despite the rise of digital media, CDs are still in high demand for audiobook listeners—and in fact, the stats about this underestimated suspect may surprise you:
- CDs still account for 60-80% of library audio circulation
- CDs are preferred by the most voracious of audiobook listeners
- BOT and Listening Library continue to release the majority of all new titles on CD
- Digital audiobooks are not a substitute for CDs—physical and downloadable versions appeal to different listeners
