MP3 Help Page

The following information should answer almost all your questions about our BOOKS ON MP3-CD™ audiobooks. However, if you still have questions or reservations, please contact our customer service department.

What is an MP3 Edition?

An MP3-CD is the latest audiobook format that Books on Tape is using to distribute our audiobooks. Each audiobook is compressed into MP3 format and then loaded or burned on to a 700MB CD. Most books can fit on one CD in MP3 format, but occasionally it takes 2 CDs.

Each BOOKS ON MP3-CD™ audiobook will be delivered in a plastic jewel case with appropriate cover art and a listing of chapters (by track number) on the inside sleeve..

What does MP3 stand for?

The name MP3 is short for MPEG Audio Layer 3, an international standard for digital audio format. The actual MP3 technology was developed by the Fraunhofer Institute in Germany.

How does MP3 technology work?

MP3 is an audio compression format that allows digital files to be compressed to very small size while maintaining their original sound quality. MP3 technology applies to spoken word in the same way it does for music. Thus, we can shrink as much as 22.5 hours of spoken word on to one 700MB CD at 128 kbps. The average 10-15 hour audio book requires about 300-400 megabytes of storage space.

Do you use multiple tracks to organize the content on your MP3-CD audiobooks?

Like our CD versions, content on MP3-CDs will be separated into multiple tracks so that you can easily find your place when listening to each title. Conversely, because of the large amount of information we have to store on each MP3-CD, tracks are split every 10 minute instead of every 3 minutes like a regular CD audiobook. For you convenience, we have also made sure that each chapter starts at the beginning of a new track.

Where can I play an MP3-CD?

Each BOOKS ON MP3-CD™ audiobook can be played from your computer's CD-ROM drive or from any compatible MP3 device.

To enable your computer to play MP3 files, you will need to make sure you have the appropriate MP3 player software installed. In most cases, you may already have an MP3 player pre-installed on your computer. If not, you can download a free player from the following locations:

MUSICMATCH Jukebox (PC, Mac, or Linux)
Windows Media Player (Pick your operating system)
RealPlayer 8 Basic (PC, Mac, or UNIX)
Winamp Media Player (PC or Mac)

To play MP3 files on an MP3-CD player, simply place the MP3-CD into the player and press play. It works just like a regular CD player!

To play MP3 files from a conventional MP3 player, place the MP3-CD in your computers' CD-ROM drive and then transfer portions of the MP3-CD, using software provided by the MP3 manufacturer, to your MP3 device.

Will I lose my place if I turn off my MP3 player?

Most conventional MP3 and MP3-CD players should remember exactly where you left off the last time you used it. This feature -- often called "resume" or "bookmarking" -- can be found on almost all of the iRiver MP3-CD players. Our favorite is the iRiver SlimX iMP-350, which has the capability to remember your place if you turn the player off or remove the MP3-CD. To find out more about purchasing one, please visit the iRiver Product Page on Amazon.com.

Where can I find a list of available titles?

You can find a list of available titles on our BOOKS ON MP3-CD™ page. We expect to increase our available inventory of BOOKS ON MP3-CD™ as quickly as possible.
