St. Brigid's Day (Irish Holiday)
Wed, February 1st, 2017
This festival celebrates Brigid, a semi-mythical character who established a famous convent in county Kildare. It is believed to coincide with a pre-Christian celebration called Imbolc. This date marked the beginning of the lambing and calving season and celebrated the availability of milk and butter in the diet. Brigid became known as a patron saint of milk and many of the traditions associated with this date were associated with encouraging lactation. Reeds were used to make dolls – known as Brídeogs – in addition to elaborate St. Brigid’s crosses, which decorated people’s houses in order to invoke the saint’s blessing over the home. As will all Irish festivals, bonfires were lit the night before as a rite of purification, and to highlight the power of the sun in Irish tradition.
