Title Description
First published in 1950, FARMER IN THE SKY is one of the first boys' books by science fiction icon Robert Heinlein. This optimistic novel addresses the ever-more-timely question of what happens when Earth's resources become too overtaxed to support human life. For teenager Bill Lerner, who lives with his widower father in the City of Southern California, overpopulation has so constricted the food supplies that they must follow a strict caloric ration, and the crowded and starving civilization has become embattled. Sound familiar? Bill's solution is to emigrate to the colony Ganymede, on Jupiter's third moon. There, a motley crew of pioneers tries, with varying success, to forge a life-sustaining environment and a civilization that will learn from the errors of the one they left behind.

Even though this book is over 50 years old, it is wonderful. Mr Brick's talents add quite alot to the story, which is well written.

Back in the 1950s, in the years before he discovered “sex” and went absolutely nuts with it, Robert Heinlein wrote a very enjoyable series of boys’ space adventure novels. “Farmer in the Sky” follows the general pattern. A youth comes of age amid the challenges of an alien environment (Ganymede, which Heinlein describes with down-home verisimilitude.) The young pilgrim is guided along his way by older, wise men…the voice of Heinlein himself. Traditional verities (embodied here in the Boy Scout oath) resonate. The story echoes a great event in Anglo-European/American history – the early colonization of the New World. Heinlein lectures authoritatively on subjects ranging from ballistics to socioeconomics and planetary ecology. These books are as addictive as popcorn.

A great starter sci-fi book for the 10-12 year old reader. A fun and enjoyable yarn.
