Title Description
Louisiana-born author Rebecca Wells' spirited novel follows a 40-year-old actress who must repair her relationship with her mother by reading a half-century's-worth of letters and clippings in the Ya-Ya Sisterhood's packet of "Divine Secrets." The Ya-Yas are the wild circle of girls who swirl around narrator Siddalee's mama, Vivi, whose voice is "part Scarlett, part Katherine Hepburn, part Tallulah." As Siddalee reads about these devoted pals, she relives her memories of her irrepressible and irresistible mother, and is rewarded with glimpses of true love and loyalty against the hilarious and poignant backdrop of life in the rural South. A moving exploration of the mother-daughter bond, and of the power of forgiveness to heal our inevitable imperfections - and the secrets are really fun to learn.
"An insightful, delicious novel." (The Oregonian)

I was unable to finish listening to this book. I had read the book a number of years ago, but when reading I was able to "skim" the repetitive parts. The plot was too slow for me to listen to, and the repetition seemed very obvious and made me impatient.
The reader was very dramatic, but I often found myself puzzled and frustrated because she emphasized words in sentences that I would not stress when reading. She seemed (at least to me) to be misreading some sentences, or changing the meaning through the odd emphasis on certain words. I've never had this problem before with an audio book. I felt like correcting her...just couldn't make it through the CDs. |

I think that Judith Ivey made this more enjoyable than it might otherwise have been. She so brought the characters to life, and made them more interesting, that I can't imagine even enjoying it as much had I read it on my own. I know several people who said they couldn't get into this book, but if you listen to Judith Ivey's performance, you will be enthralled

I was truly impressed with the humor and intensity of this audiobook. Judith Ivey, the reader, made these characters come alive. The story was wonderful, and Ms. Ivey was absolutely superb. Thank you for many joyous moments.

I just loved this book and the reader. It was funny, touching, and well written. Everything that you would want in a book. Kept my interest all the way through.

What a fun and intriguing read! All the characters were rich and entertaining, and Judith Ivey brought them to life with unique accents and mannerisms. This is one of the few books I've listened to where I felt the reader was truly a dramatic performer. An interesting facet of the book is seeing how the characters unfold through vignettes from the past. You can't help but be touched by them, even if you revile them. I will remember "Vivi, dahhhling" in all her colors for a long time.

This book kept me company on a long trip through the desert. I found parts entertaining, but on the whole, it doesn't stand up. Loose threads everywhere. Cookie-cutter characters with formulaic dialogue. Feeble attempts at humor, suspense, and pathos. Wordy, repetitive writing style and nothing happened you didn't see coming. The reader, however, did an admirable job with what she had to work with. She does a good Cajun accent and creates identifiable voices for each character. The wheezing of one character seemed especially difficult. Too bad she didn't have better material to work with.

The reader, with her southern draaawwlll made this book come alive. I didn't want it to end.
Beyond excellent, beyond 5 stars! |

Judith Ivey has proven to be an exceptional reader. Her voice development was wonderful. Each character came alive as individuals. The story was one of the first true, honest relationship studies of mothers and daughters.

This is a fabulous reading of a book that might initially sound like it will be silly, but turns out to be an in-depth study of the long term friendship of four women. The reading enhances the whole experience, the accents and overall performance are superb.

I picked up this audio book at the library on a whim and loved everything about it. The author reads with a passion like I've never encountered in any other audio book (and I've listened to a lot). It was a pleasant surprise and I look forward to more books from Rebecca Wells. It is one of my favorite books.
