Title Description
This is the story of the decisive day of the decisive battle of the Civil War. The third day of the battle is remembered principally for Pickett's Charge, the horrific sacrifice of life that Lee hoped would break the Union line and split that army in two. Drawing on letters and diaries written by men who participated in the day's fighting, Wert analyzes why Lee attacked, examining the failure of the Confederate command system, and explaining how Union artillery destroyed the charge before it had a chance at success. He also examines often-neglected events of the day, such as the fierce combat at Culp's Hill, the most prolonged fighting of the battle, and the cavalry engagement between, among others, J.E.B. Stuart and George Custer.

"[Wert's narrative]...deserves a place on the shelf alongside the work of Bruce Catton, Shelby Foote and other popular historians of the Civil War." (Amazon.com)

As difficult as it must be, Mr. Wert had added some fresh insights into the climax of this, the most famous battle ever fought on American soil. By taking us as deep as the company level in some instances, he adds more personality to the events and provides enlightening detail. He gives the fighting at Culp's Hill, the artillery and General George Gordon Meade the credit they deserve in the outcome. In fact, Wert is one of the few historians to give General Meade much credit at all for the victory. (The National Park Service's web page on Gettysburg fails even to mention his being there.) His role is generally treated as a fluke at best and at worst as an ungentlemanly affront to the memory of Robert E. Lee. A well documented look at the battle's last day, the book is must reading.
