Absolutly magnificent, I took both parts back to England and reveled in their content. One can close your eyes and listen to John Lee bring this story to life, put the book and John Lee together and they are worth 14.

A wonderful story brought to life by an excellent reader. John Lee has such a marvellous ability to bring the characters right to you, I hated that the book was ending and Dirk Struan and Me-Me were no more.

This book was an excellent example of Mr. Lee's fine narration. Both the book and the narration are so good, in fact, that one almost does not mind that seemingly every sentence uttered by the characters ends in "by God" or "never mind." Very highly recommended!

Being a fan of historical sagas, I expected to fully enjoy "Tai-pan," my first James Clavell novel. I only got as far as Tape 4. The loose plotting made the story difficult to follow. John Lee's histrionics with accents made the Chinese characters impossible to understand. I finally bailed out when our hero beat his girlfriend black and blue for "disobedience." Maybe this passed for a great saga in the sixties, but give me John Jakes anyday.

Another masterpiece. This is a book made better by the interpretative reading of John Lee. I wanted it to never end.

Extraordinary story read by a true master. I enjoyed every minute of it and hated to see it end.

John has a brilliant command of the story and his acting is beyond comparison. He is equally as good as David Case. Wonderful Scots, Chinese, and Pidgin accents. This is a great story and a world class reader. Don't miss this one!

Not only are Clavell's east Asia sagas great adventures (particularly Tai-pan, Gai-Jin and Shogun), but John Lee who read Tai-pan and Gai-Jin is as close to the perfect reader/entertainer that I have listened to during the ten years and dozens of B-O-T® rentals my wife and I have enjoyed. I think David Case read Shogun (I read that one in paper years ago not tape) and from other B-O-T books I know he too is an excellent reader but in a very different sort of way. These are audiobooks that (despite the length) you will mourn when they end.

I have read Tai-Pan and seen the movie based on the novel. Hearing the audio version makes the story even more interesting.

I was greatly impressed by reader's versatilty in creating all the various accents needed to do the reading properly. One could easily think that a whole cast had been assigned, not only one reader.

I encourage anyone interested in the history of the "Opium Wars," and the British trade with China to listen to this book.
