Title Description
The setting is Hong Kong, 1963. The action spans scarcely more than a week, but these are the days of high adventure: from kidnapping and murder to financial double-dealing and natural catastrophes -- fire, flood, and landslide. Yet they are days filled as well with all the mystery and romance of Hong Kong -- the heart of Asia -- rich in every trade... money, flesh, opium, power.

This long book takes place within a few days, and includes a wonderfully rich mix of history, characters, espionage, and romance, against a background of contrasting cultures and fascinating locale. Clavell is an enthralling storyteller -- I found myself sitting in the parking lot late for work. John Lee is excellent as a reader, great at the different accents.

For fans of Clavell, this is a must read. It is naturally the next book in the line of the Asian Saga he began with Shogun and ended with Whirlwind (not Escape). It is a deep, complex and convoluted story told on a grand scale. His mixture of cultures...traditional Chinese, traditional British, set against the non-traditional Americans makes for excellent dialogue and intrigue as all these groups jockey for position during a gigantic financial negotiation. The book was a treat, and the mini-series on television really did it justice.

Clavell is a superb writer and a master story teller and this is perhaps his crowning achievement. The story is set in Hong Kong in the early 60's and does a remarkable job of bringing that time and place to life. The characters are very well developed and the reading is easily the best I can recall. This is a must listen to book!

It is hard to believe that Clavell is gone and we will hear no more of the Struan saga. It has been one of the great pleasures of my life to have heard the stories of Clavell presented by the talented and gifted readers, Case for Shogun and John Lee for the Struan stories. It would be impossible to pick a favorite!

John Lee does another outstanding job of bringing the many characters of a Clavell novel to life. His ability to move between the distinctive personalities of a patrician British male and a young Chinese girl with ease is captivating. His reading adds great depth to already marvelous story. This book is on par with Tai-Pan.

Reader and novel are fantastic! I ususally listen to books in the car on my commute. But this one I had to bring inside and listen at night too.
