| I found this book to be very interesting, thought provoking and provided insite into the feelings, prejudice of the time (and today). The repeated reading personal letters between Eleanor and Hick, that usually said the same thing, did little add to the understanding of the character or the time. The book could have been 3 tapes shorter without including each letter in detail, and been book far more interesting. It seems the author used the personal letters as a filler most of the time and I felt Eleanor's privacy was violated unncessarily. The number of people included in the books was a bit overwhelming and at times, I would have appreciated a deaper understanding of the character.
I felt yhe book read like someone trying to eat an elephant. That is, drownding with too much subject matter and trying to write one book. The book is a histroy book on several subjects, and a biography. |

| I had read Volume I of this biography and was not disappointed in Volume II. Cook's voluminous
research portrays a sensitive and flawed woman who searched for fulfillment in her personal life only
to find it on the political stage. Truly unique -- there has never been anyone like Eleanor Roosevelt!
Some listeners might find the level of detail and large cast of characters exhausting, especially if
they are not already familiar with the New Deal era. Even the energy of the reader, Kate Reading,
seems to flag towards the end. All in all, if you want to go beyond the surface and delve into the
details of ER's life, you will find Vol. 1 & 2 of these books indispensable. |
