Title Description
The time is World War II. The place is a brutal prison camp deep in Japanese-occupied territory. Here, within the seething mass of humanity, one man, an American corporal, seeks dominance over both captives and captors alike. His weapons are human courage, unblinking understanding of human weaknesses, and total willingness to exploit every opportunity to enlarge his power and corrupt or destroy anyone who stands in his path.
"A dramatic, utterly engrossing novel...harsh and brutal in its revelations...James Clavell is a spellbinding storyteller, a brilliant observer, a man who understands much and forgives much." (New York Times)
"Scintillating...vibrant...expert." (Washington Post)

A truly amazing book. I was sad for it to end. Some of the voices of the characters are distracting: the reader sounds like he is out of breath or having severe cramps.

What would you do to survive if you were a WWII POW? Was it ethical to trade on the black market with the Japanese gaurds? What laws do you follow, your commander's, the enemy's, or rules of the jungle. Thousands of men go into a POW camp and only only a handful barely survive, yet one man, the King, lives well. His life as a prisoner was almost comfortable, but it came at a cost to the men around him. Was he a devil or was he helping the camp at great personal risk for which he was rewarded. The author lets you decide. Great story, great reader, very thought provoking.

Clavell is the best storyteller of the 20th century. I have loved every one of his books.
