The impression of the Durant histories is that everyone after Columbus had symphilis. Nonetheless, the France of Louis XIV had everything, although it was eventually ruined by its own success. The king forced the nobles to court where he could keep an eye on them, so they lost their power, local function, and ability to do anything. France so far outshone its rivals that everyone else formed an alliance against them. Success blinded them to the dangers of low morals, high taxes, excessive ambitions, foreign policy failures, and the failure to make compromises to preserve their political system over the long term. This book is great history and great drama.
