Durant is a genius. Everyone should read these works.

This book has unforgettable summaries of Montaigne, Shakespeare, and Bacon. A lot of the history of this period is depressing, but the brightest light was philosophical skepticism. The Durants brilliantly explain the value of how the doubting philosophers opened new possibilities for knowledge.
