Title Description
In the finest tradition of classic British mystery, Jeanne Dams's first novel introduces Dorothy Martin, a charming amateur sleuth and lover of outrageous hats.

For Dorothy, widowed American removed to England, the Christmas service is painful enough; it's her first holiday without Frank. Stumbling over the body of Canon Billings does nothing to improve her mood. A good mystery on a chilly English night does have some appeal. The Canon may be dead, but Dorothy Martin is very much alive -- and sleuthing.

"Clear and captivating...I can't wait for more of Dorothy's adventures." (Carolyn Hart)

This was my first Dorothy Martin mystery and it will be my last. The plot is a retread of every tired old mystery I've ever read, filled with one-dimensional, stereotypical characters I couldn't care about. The identity of the killer should have been obvious to anyone but a complete idiot from the outset. I found Dorothy to be rather dim and very annoying. Had she shown any charm or wit or humor, I may have been able to get past the ridiculous plot.

Kate Reading is a terrific reader, but this book may have been better served by a British narrator, since, Dorothy aside, most of the characters are British. Miss Reading chose to perform the dialog of all the British characters using the proper "King's English" accent. There is a wide variety of regional accents found in Great Britian, and some characters would have rung truer if she had employed the appropriate accents. On the other hand, maybe there is no narrator on earth who could have breathed any life into this lifeless story. Jeanne Dams should just stay in Indiana, for she did a complete disserve to the British mystery with this tripe. What a waste of time!!!

The book was very enjoyable. Light...and a nice break from today's news and events. I appreciated the fact that the book is clean...nothing offensive or gory as with so many other books these days. A fun read to figure out who done it.

I quit reading the book after the first tape. I didn't like listening to descriptions and view points on hats. I wanted to listen to a story. Since I found the book absolutely boring, I may not have appreciated the reader.
