I've been working my way through all of Elizabeth George's Thomas Lynley novels with varying degrees of interest and satisfaction. The only recurring character I have any empathy for is Barbara Havers. The intertwined lives of Lynley, St. James, Lady Helen and Deborah go from tedious to annoying, and get in the way of the plots.
However, "Playing for the Ashes" has been the first book in the series that I wholeheartedly recommend. She departs from her usual format with her first-person narration of the story of Olivia, and it's a chiller. For once, the author's preoccupation with graphic sex has a point in the story. Even though I correctly guessed the killer, the story unfolded in a surprising and fancinating way. The story still haunts me. |

| This is the book in this series that has haunted me most. In this book, surely the road to hell IS paved with good intentions. No one draws characters more completely than Elizabeth George, and Donada Peters is the perfect choice as reader. |

| It doesn't get any better than Elizabeth George read by Donada Peters. Peters' performance in "Playing for the Ashes" is fabulous... I've never enjoyed her more! |

| A great read! The characters are wonderfully
built up and easy to relate to. It was a
disappointment to reach the end! |
