All that we are comes from the Greeks, from our system of laws (Solon and Dracus) to our predatory and useless attorney class so hated and despised, yet a necessary component to our Greek-like society. Even our religious foundations began here, as did our penchant for democracy, which the Greeks proved will progress to ruination if left unchecked by a strong Constitution. They did it all before us, and they did it more than once. To see where we came from and, more importantly, where we are headed, this is your window to our future and a fascinating look at our past.

All of Durant's books in this series are life-changing. This is the best.

What was the trial of Socrates about? Who was Homer? What are the philosophers talking about? Did all those thinkers really live in Greece? (No, actually--say the Durants. The Greeks lived all over the place.) What caused the Trojan war? This history seems to answer all one's questions and raise some new ones. Great fun, but habit forming.

This is historical education at it's finest. Durant's style is economical in both emotion and language. You are in good hands on this journey through the ages.
