Title Description
Chance and bad weather lead Deborah St. James and the vicar of Winslough to London's National Gallery to view da Vinci's study for his "Virgin and Child." The vicar's comment that Joseph is missing strikes a chord with Deborah, whose inability to bear a child causes her deep grief. . .and makes for a growing rift in her marriage.
Comforted by the vicar's words, Deborah and her husband Simon take a holiday in Lancashire where she can regain peace of mind and see the vicar again. One detail mars the plan -- the vicar dies before they arrive.
As a forensic scientist Simon suspects murder. With Detective Inspector Thomas Lynley's assistance, he means to find out why no charges were brought against the sensual herbalist who fed the vicar a dinner laced with death.

| If you're a fan of this series, this book is important in the continuation of the personal stories of Lindley and the St. Jameses. It's a good story, but it does drag on in a few places. If only Ms. George was sticking to the length of her first two novels in this series, the story could be more appreciated. But she's getting more bogged down in personal detail & description, with the "mystery" getting further lost in other subplots. I'd rather listen to these books than read them, I think. I still feel this is a great series, and continue to enjoy the full characters, both old & new. |

| I like Elizabeth George, but listening to her books read by Donada Peters makes the experience more enjoyable. Ms. Peters is the best reader I have ever heard. She uses subtle changes in her voice to play the different parts, cutting down on the "he said, she said" usage which annoys me. The storyline was good, George always keeps my attention. |

| Good book - worth a read. Only downside was that, for my tastes, too many potentially interesting characters left flat. As for the reading, Donada Peters is as fabulous as ever. |

| A good plot, and good characters. However, I felt
it took too long to get into the real investigation. Would certainly recommend it. |
