Title Description
A casual summer outing in the high desert to investigate rumors of native sorcery leads Navajo Tribal Police Lt. Joe Leaphorn and anthropologist Bergen McKee to a series of inexplicably grisly murders.

Leaphorn's uncanny powers of deduction and his knowledge of the ways of his people make him one of the genre's most insightful and intriguing sleuths.

"Outstanding. . .suspense enough for anyone." (Saturday Review)

I've read all the Tony Hillerman books in paperback years ago and look forward to discovering them again with Books on Tape, Inc. This is the first in the series, and it's fun to see Joe Leaphorn as a young man and in a somewhat secondary role. That's the drawback of this book as well, as much of it focuses on the anthropologist Bergen McKee, when fans of the series will want to get back to Leaphorn. Still, you can't go wrong reading Hillerman and this book is where it all began. I wished the reader, Jonathan Marosz, would put some more life into his reading. Hillerman is laconic but this reading is fairly uninspired.
