Title Description
Jack Aubrey and Stephen Maturin, veterans of many battles, return to those seas where they first sailed as shipmates. Jack is now a senior captain in the Royal Navy's blockade of Toulon, a harder, colder assignment than the dashing frigate actions of his early days.
A sudden turn of events takes the two men on a hazardous mission to the Greek Islands, where all Aubrey's skills come triumphantly into play.
"O'Brian's stories are unheroic and unconventional. Like le Carre, he has erased the boundary separating a debased genre from 'serious' fiction. O'Brian is a novelist, one of the best we have." (Los Angeles Times)

I am a big fan of the Aubrey/Maturin series, but very little of interest seems to happen in this installment until the last chapter. There are a couple of interesting plot twists that effectively keep Aubrey's ship out of action, and the boredom of a naval blockade is effectively presented--maybe too effectively.

I think that each successive book in the series is better than the last, at least as of this 8th installment. While I am a fan of the action scenarios, there is certainly no lack of interest or excitement in this book. I think the action sequences are every bit as exciting as in the others in the series. O'Brien's writing is always a pleasure to hear. I do not think a reader could go wrong starting with any of the first 8 of the series.

Another entertaining Aubrey/Maturin installment. However this episode is unusually devoid of action. As a devoted fan of the series, I enjoyed the interaction between the characters - particularly Aubrey's fatherly feelings for his 1st Lieutenant. But a new reader to these adventures might have been bored by the lack of activity of the ships during the course of the story. The reading was outstanding.
