Title Description
Jean M. Auel’s enthralling Earth’s Children series has become a literary phenomenon, beloved by readers around the world. In a brilliant novel as vividly authentic and entertaining as those that came before, Jean M. Auel returns us to the earliest days of humankind and to the captivating adventures of the courageous woman called Ayla.

With her companion, Jondalar, Ayla sets out on her most dangerous and daring journey--away from the welcoming hearths of the Mammoth Hunters and into the unknown. Their odyssey spans a beautiful but sparsely populated and treacherous continent, the windswept grasslands of Ice Age Europe, casting the pair among strangers. Some will be intrigued by Ayla and Jondalar, with their many innovative skills, including the taming of wild horses and a wolf; others will avoid them, threatened by what they cannot understand; and some will threaten them. But Ayla, with no memory of her own people, and Jondalar, with a hunger to return to his, are impelled by their own deep drives to continue their trek across the spectacular heart of an unmapped world to find that place they can both call home.

Yeah there is a bit of droning on the scenery in this one, but I love to have these two lovers working now as a well oiled team of adventurers. Jondalar gets in some big trouble and Ayla saves the day for him quite nicely I'd say. I enjoyed seeing a heroine do some intimidation and butt-kicking to save her man.

I can't believe this is the last of the Jean Auel books that are available on tape - can't wait til SHELTERS OF STONE comes out on tape. I couldn't understand why some of the pronunciations of names were different in this book from the previous three, but I got used to it after a while. There were some boring parts when describing the ancient lands of Europe, but for the most part it was as fascinating as the previous three books in the series. It was especially touching near the end when she saw some 'clan' people again. The conclusion was touching.

The book dribbles on a bit too much - too much describing of the scenery etc. A condensed version would be great - I like the series generally. One point though on the reading. Donada Peters changed her pronounciation of a few names from the first 3 books and it drove me crazy. I don't know how the names are spelled, but her pronounciation of Z's changed and some of the names of the clan men from the first book changed. I will still read/listen to the 5th book. I am hooked.
