The First Salute
|
EMBED THIS CLIP |
Title Description On November 16, 1776, a ship carrying the flag of the Continental Congress entered port at St. Eustatius in the West Indies. Adhering to custom, the ship fired a salute and the guns of the fort returned their ritual response. But this act acknowledged the vessel and its country as legitimate. It was the first official salute to the United States of America. Taking this as her staring point, Barbara Tuchman illuminates the effect our revolution had not only on America and England, but also on Holland and France, and by extension, the entire Old World as well. "THE FIRST SALUTE recasts America's tumultous early years in a clarifying light. It gives us an understanding of the events that underlay the birth of our own nation and the beginning of the modern Western world."
