Title Description
A young woman obsessed with a man torn between his love for her and his womanizing; one of his mistresses and her faithful lover--these are the two couples whose story is told in this masterful novel by Czech-born Milan Kundera.

In a world in which lives are shaped by irrevocable choices and by fortuitous events, a world in which everything occurs but once, existence seems to lose its substance, its weight. We feel "the unbearable lightness of being" not only as the consequence of our private actions but also in the public sphere, and the two inevitably interwine.

"Kundera is a virtuso...a work of the boldest mastery, orginality and richness." (Vanity Fair)

If you liked the movie, then hold on to your reading ears. While the movie tells the story once, the book retells it several times from the perspective of several characters. Each time the reader/listener gets a little more insight into the "reality" of the central relationship.

I'll never forget the night I listened to the ending of this book. Because I was not reading it, I couldn't tell when, exactly, it would end. It was such a powerful experience that I had to pull over on a lonely highway late on a summer night just to let it set in. This is a hypnotic, existential novel that asks all the big questions. Kundera beats Camus!
