| What an amazing story of an amazing man. I had no idea the 20th Century still supported a world such as that of Lyndon Johnson in his early years! Johnson has qualities both admirable and despicable in the extreme. A very well-written and meticulously researched book, it is also very easy to listen to. |

As good as biography gets; and, as good as reading gets.
Grover Gardner brings this masterpiece alive.
I couldn't put it down. |

| This not just a Johnson biography but a societal painting of the time with biographies of the individuals who influenced Johnson. You also experience the insight of state and national politics in the plain descriptions which the author paints in a flowing manner. Now I know why states that keep their representatives and senators in office become politically powerful and receive financially rewarding projects. And you do not need a Harvard education, just common sense, politeness and planned luck to go a long way. |

| This book is a masterpiece of biography, well-written and exhaustively researched. You come to know the young Lyndon Johnson as a supremely selfish and conniving figure. You'll also marvel at his ability to make good things happen, whether it's as a young schoolteacher or as an amazing effective congressman, bringing electricity to the lonely, isolated Texas Hill Country. Includes a mini-biography of Sam Rayburn! If you want to understand Texas -- and America -- in the 20th century, this book is a good place to start. Grover Gardner does a great job of reading (as usual). |
