Title Description
Cold Sassy, Georgia, had never been a whirlpool of excitement. If the preacher's wife's petticoats showed, the ladies could make the talk last a week.

But on July 5, 1906, things took a scandalous turn. That was the day E. Rucker Blakeslee, proprietor of the general store and barely three weeks a widower, eloped with Miss Love Simpson -- a woman half his age and, worse yet, a Yankee!

"Rich with emotion, humor and tenderness...a novel about an old man growing young, a young man growing up, and the modern age coming to a small Southern town." (The Washington Post Book World)

Slightly edited for radio presentation.

This book by Olive Ann Burns is a compendium of southern, small town life at the turn of the 20th century. You will feel as though you know this book's wonderful and funny characters personally. This story of the life and family of E. Rucker Blakeslee is told by his grandson, Will Tweedy, who always manages to be in the right place at the right time. The humor and pathos of Cold Sassy Tree will warm your heart and you will grieve when the story is over.

This recorded edition, read by Dick Estell, rates at the top of my list of recorded books. Mr. Estell gives each character a personality all its own. His rendition is pure entertainment. I have listened to my library's copy 3 times, and I'm now doing something I've not done before. I'm purchasing the tapes. There are other recordings of Cold Sassy Tree using other readers. This is the one you want!
